Challenge: CLFF Wave #18: #31: Friend to Jonathan at a
bar.
Notes: This was a fun challenge. The idea came to me right
away.
Summary: Jonathan finds out about
It was the middle of August, and the sun was blazing hot and
dry. None could escape the raging heat, and the dark interior of the Wild
Coyote offered little comfort to the farmers of Smallville.
Stepping into the dimly lit bar, Jonathan Kent stopped, letting
his eyes adjust to the dimness of the light. Looking around the smoke filled room,
he saw that there were a few empty seats up at the bar.
Sitting on one of the empty stools, Jonathan ordered a MGD.
Once a dark bottle was placed in front of him, he took a long drink, savoring
the cold beer as it poured down his throat.
“Evening Jonathan!”
Turning at the greeting, the senior
“Evening to you too, Matt.” Jonathan took another long drink
from his beer. “How’s the family?”
“Good. Things are a little hectic at the moment, but once
the weather starts to cool off, everything should calm down.”
“Right! Clara is heading off to
University soon, isn’t she?”
“Yup.” The grin on Matt’s face was
full of pride, though his eyes were sad. His daughter, who was a year older
than
“We’re gonna drive her up to Met U in about a week and a
half.” Matt chuckled softly. “Amy has been going nuts, making sure that Clara
has everything.”
Finishing off his beer, Jonathan ordered a second for
himself and another for Matt.
“So how about your family?
“Yup. It’s going to be strange not
having him around. I’m glad I’ve still got another year to go before that though.”
“And Martha?”
“She’s good. I don’t think she’s quite ready to think about
Matt laughed out loud at that. “I don’t think mothers ever
are.”
The two farmers sat in silence, enjoying their cold beers.
Both had their minds on the fact that their children were growing up, and
getting ready to leave home.
“So…” Matt started.
“Yeah?”
“I’ve wanted to say this for a while now.” Matt hesitated.
“Yes?” Jonathan prompted.
“I wanted to tell you I think you’re a good man, Kent.”
“Well, thank you Matt.”
“After all. Some parents might have
some trouble accepting that sort relationship. Not to mention, who it’s with.”
Jonathan was confused. “What relationship, with whom?”
“You don’t need to pretend.” Matt took a drink of his beer. “Clark and Lex Luthor’s.”
“Excuse me?” Jonathan could only stare in shock.
“I mean, I have no problem with it. My younger brother is
gay.” Matt turned to face a slack jawed Jonathan. “But there are some religious
folk around here, that don’t take to kindly to two men bein’
together.”
“Shit!” Jonathan exclaimed.
“Yeah. That’s what I first thought.
But then I saw then together.”
“You...you saw them?”
“Sure. It was about a month ago. Luthor orders whole
chickens from us.” He took another drink from the bottle. “I was dropping off
an order in the kitchen, and saw them through the window. They were walking in
the garden.”
Matt finished the last of the beer, leaving the empty bottle
on the bar.
“I must say, that the two of them look good together. They
fit.”
Standing up, Matt stretched, back popping in a few places.
Shaking off his stretch, Matt turned back to Jonathan.
“I think the best part though, was that I could tell they
were both very happy. Which is kinda
a funny thing to say about a Luthor.” He chuckled.
Dropping a hand onto Jonathan’s slack shoulder, Matt said,
“See you around Jonathan. You should bring your family over for dinner next
week.”
With a last goodbye, Matt turned and left the bar. The cool
beers he had drunk, enough of a boost to brave the outside heat again.
Jonathan could only stare blankly as the door swung shut
behind the younger farmer. The concept of
Jonathan turned to the bartender. “Double whiskey please.”
